The Beat Generation is a very interesting label. Having been the home of such greats as Marley Marl, Jazzy Jeff and Will.I.Am and pumped out a huge selection of eclectic titles, there is no doubt that the label has produced a reputation for bringing new talent to the surface. There is also no doubt that although the new release from Madlib entitled WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip is not as prestigious a release as the aforementioned, it is a good quality album.

Although I really dislike using the term, there’s a real ‘old skool’ feel to this album. Madlib produces some early-90s style beats, and cuts and scratches some great funk, whilst also splicing in some great radio-style outtakes. The Way That I Live is a beautifully melodious soul track featuring the stunning vocal talents of Stacy Epps, and has a rough feel that beautifully contrasts her luscious vocals. Disco Dance featuring The Beat Konducta (Madlib’s pseudonym) is a little messy, but I Want it Back featuring The Professionals is suitably ’street’ and has some great rhymes to sink your teeth into.

It’s also great to hear one of my favourite’s Georgia Anne Muldrow, who is always great, and perhaps a little unused on releases such as these. Other artists highlighted include J-Rocc, Guilty Simpson and Murs. However it is a real shame that Peanut Butter Wolf is nowhere to be found.

A good release from an immensely talented beatsmith. Sure to flip your wig!
